Filipino - Canadian National Scholarship Program FCNSP

  • The Filipino-Canadian National Scholarship Program (FCNSP) is a joint initiative developed and delivered by the Golden Balangay Foundation and Kabangka. It supports Filipino-Canadian students enrolled at Canadian post-secondary institutions, as well as high school students who will be enrolling, through recognition, mentorship, community connections, and financial awards. The program unites community partners to spotlight achievement, reduce barriers to education, and celebrate leadership and excellence.

  • In Canada, Filipino-Canadian students continue to face barriers to accessing and completing post-secondary education, including financial pressure, information gaps, disrupted schooling linked to family migration, ESL streaming, and credential recognition challenges. FCNSP provides recognition, mentorship, and financial awards that help students stay enrolled, focus on learning, and connect with a national network of mentors, partners, and peers.

Common barriers to accessing and completing post secondary education:

    • Enrollment and completion gaps:In Ontario only 13.2 percent Filipino-Canadians attend post secondary education [Statistics Canada; research by Dr. May Farrales].

    • Financial pressure: Many graduates carry significant debt at graduation, with averages of 16,700 and 30,600 dollars [Statistics Canada; 2021 National Graduates Survey].

    • System barriers include family separation under the Live in Caregiver Program, credential recognition issues, ESL streaming, and requalification delays such as needing a Canadian high school diploma even when one was earned in the Philippines.

    Impact of FCNSP

    • Financial awards that reduce tuition and living cost pressure, helping students stay enrolled and focused

    • The program connects recipients and applicants to a national Filipino Canadian community of mentors, alumni, and partners

    • Targeted scholarship streams that meet distinct needs: First Generation, Graduate Level Legacy, Academic Excellence, Arts and Culture, and General

    • Optional mentorship, with eligible recipients able to opt in to mentoring led by sponsors

    • Raises the visibility of Filipino Canadian excellence across Canada

    • The program actively seeks donors and sponsors who want to help uplift the Filipino Canadian community

The Golden Balangay Foundation and Kabangka are deeply committed to advancing Filipino-Canadian representation, education, and empowerment. Over the past six years, both organizations have nurtured thousands of leaders and created transformative opportunities.

The Filipino-Canadian National Scholarship Program (FCNSP) is a critical next step. It ensures financial barriers don’t prevent our youth from achieving their academic and leadership potential.

  • FCNSP is a program delivered in partnership by Kabangka and the Golden Balangay Foundation (GBF).

It’s incredibly empowering to be part of this first cohort of students and to have more financial and community support as I go on my educational journey, and hopefully pursue a career in medicine.
